College students banding ducks

HuntOnly Field Staff Sooner or later - most likely later - what feels like spring will arrive. Just looking at the calendar makes that a pretty safe prediction, but I also know that spring is getting closer because of a bump in the volume of calls I get from students and parents looking for guidance and insight on a successful career outdoors field.

North Dakota Ducks...

HuntOnly Field Staff That fat, grain-fed greenhead that decoys just before deer season could just as well have been born and raised within the same zip code you’re hunting, instead of a thousand miles north on the Canadian prairie.

North Dakota Outdoors

HuntOnly Field Staff For many waterfowl hunters September is a transition, kind of like waking up in the morning and taking your first few groggy steps searching for the light. It's the first cup of coffee of the hunting season, while October is a good share of the day.

Duck Flight

HuntOnly Field Staff The NFL season opened a few weeks back with many teams having high expectations for a banner year. Such is the case for the North Dakota waterfowl season, which opens Sept. 25 for residents and Oct. 2 for nonresidents.

2010 spring snow goose conservation season

HuntOnly Field Staff The 2010 spring snow goose conservation season opened Feb 20. No we didn't make a mistake, the probability of snow geese migrating back into North Dakota before March is slim, but the remote chance of a mild winter, limited snow cover and early spring are possible. Yes, I said possible, but improbable.

Duck stamps help more than just waterfowl and ducks

HuntOnly Field Staff Over the past decade I've read numerous accounts on the rising popularity of watchable wildlife, which is a more inclusive and contemporary terminology than simply birdwatching.

North Dakota-raised mallards are still in North Dakota in late October

HuntOnly Field Staff The next time you find yourself kicking cans in the shop, killing time at the gas station or coffee shop with the crew, I ask you to raise a question about favorite ducks.

August Geese

HuntOnly Field Staff I thought seriously about whether to write a hunting piece during July, as summer is finally here and most of us don't want to think too much about fall just yet.

Waterfowl Habitat; Ducks and Geese

HuntOnly Field Staff For some reason, when North Dakota is singled out as a benchmark in agriculture or wind energy potential, few people discount or argue our place as a leader. After trying to find the perfect May day to cast a line or steer clear of white caps, who can deny the wind?

Buck Gardner Interview...

HuntOnly Field Staff As a waterfowler, all the knowledge I have obtained has always come from someone else. Well, maybe with the exception of what not to do, that all was self taught. Fun stuff like, testing water depth with a new gun, or trying to substitute toilet paper with willow leaves (Not durable, let me tell you). But all the things that make me a half way decent wing shot today I learned from someone else. My Dad taught me that it was always good to have a durable thermos for those cold mornings, and if you didn't have a durable
