Patience pays in the turkey woods

HuntOnly Field Staff After some serious negotiations I finally received permission to hunt some property about 35 miles west of where I live. This property is typical south Texas brush country with draws running through the thorn-infested hills.

Turkey Locator Calls and Techniques

HuntOnly Field Staff Locator calls, used to trick a gobbler into betraying his position, could become your deadliest weapon yet in the spring turkey woods.

Opening Day, Turkey Style...

HuntOnly Field Staff Well to say the least my turkey season here in Oklahoma opened with a boom! By- laying out the first bird in Payne county Oklahoma, USA. And well since then there have been sporadic booms and even a few arrows that have went thud. Well I took on the challenge of taking a new comer to the spring woods actually more like two or three. The first tagged his bird; a bearded hen 30 minutes into the hunt with any bearded bird being legal for harvest I quickly told him to shoot! this in the long run would be better

Learning from the veterans and the beginners in the turkey woods

HuntOnly Field Staff I’ve already wrote about helping my little cousin (Daniel) get his first deer and my little brother (Dustin) his first turkey. But now here is a “story” about trying to help that little cousin (Daniel), get his first turkey on his first turkey hunt ever!

Turkey Hunting Talk

HuntOnly Field Staff For the last 10 years I’ve been able to enjoy something that gets me through the period which starts at the end of hunting season and ends at the start of fishing season. Although I shed hunt a few times during this period, the real fun starts for me when spring gobbler season comes around.

To kill a turkey bird...

HuntOnly Field Staff Well how do we accomplish one of the hardest feats in our hunting endeavors, killing an old wise long bearded gobbler with eyes like motion sensors and a sixth, seventh or even some claim an eighth sense that tells him something’s up?!

Helping someone get their first turkey

HuntOnly Field Staff I guess it must have been five or more years ago when I was a freshman in college here at Oklahoma State University. I left Stillwater on the afternoon before opening day of turkey season to head home to hunt a bird I had begun to call “curly”.

Oklahoma Turkey's Grand Slam...

HuntOnly Field Staff Every year there are a few of us turkey hunters that think a little about how awesome it would be to complete a grand slam on the 4 subspecies of wild turkeys or a royal slam taking 5 of the subspecies. This involves taking an Eastern wild turkey, a Rio Grande turkey, a Merriam wild turkey, a Goulds’ wild turkey and an Osceola wild turkey for a royal slam but for a grand slam you only need four of the sub species all of the five with the exception of the Goulds.

My Favorite Turkey Hunt

HuntOnly Field Staff It was five years ago when I took my 9 year old son turkey hunting for the first time. He had been deer hunting with me since he turned 7 years old. He would fall asleep in the blind. I’d wake him up when a deer, turkey or fox came by.

Turkey Hunting Tips: The Basics

HuntOnly Field Staff Know Your Bird: The first thing I recommend is getting to know what the gobblers are normally doing on a day to day basis, this means spending a few days in the woods before the season starts. This acquired information comes in handy when your early morning hunt gets skunked.

Turkey seasons’ opening day

HuntOnly Field Staff No matter what state you live in what day is the first day of your spring turkey season? Or even a youth season? The opening day isn’t the first day you carry your shotgun or bow into the woods. No Sir, you better have had been “hunting” for several days or even weeks before hand. In saying hunting, I mean preparing.

Birds, bows, and bad weather

HuntOnly Field Staff In search of a dual grand slam, my buddy and myself headed to Kansas to bow hunt Rio Grand turkeys. We loaded up the truck and made the 8 hour drive to the northern part of the state. In case the birds proved too smart for the stick and string, we had planned our hunt to include the opening day of gun season. I had bagged two Rios last year so that portion of my quest for the grand slam was complete, but my goal was to get my buddy his first so we can continue our quest next

Spring Turkeys

Show the tom what he wants to see – or hide

HuntOnly Field Staff “The tom came over the crest and then just stood there about a hundred yards away and kept looking in my direction. No matter how much I called he wouldn’t come any closer.” This and similar complaints I hear quite often from turkey hunters. It’s frustrating when you call for hours and finally a big tom comes in and then hangs up just out of shooting range.

The Pros and Cons of Diaphragm Turkey Calls

HuntOnly Field Staff The diaphragm turkey call has been around for many years but became really popular about ten years ago. The first type of these calls were made by hunters looking for a different call that didn’t involve movement to coax a tom closer for the last few steps needed to get a good killing shot. The first crude diaphragms date back to the late 40’s and early 50’s and were fashioned from condoms (true) and plumber lead. Boy, have times changed since then! While modern diaphragms are still made predominantly of latex material, the variety of calls available is overwhelming.

Preperation for Turkey Hunting

HuntOnly Field Staff Whitetail season is now officially over in Illinois. The stands are packed away and the layers of late season gear are back in their scent free totes, and its time to transition to the next season. Throw away the scent free shampoo and hang up the rattling antlers. In only a couple months it will be time fill the pre-dawn woods with the hoot of the barred owl in pursuit of turkeys!

First Turkey of the Season

HuntOnly Field Staff Friday afternoon I left the house early to move some cameras around and freshen my mock scrapes. I had several different stands to hunt according to the wind direction that day. Depending on if the farmer had the corn out on one farm was the determining factor as to which stand I would be hunting.

Turkey Season Revisited...
