I shot a big one with a 223 and there was a loud crack and he took off. Haven't ever seen him again. lol something big and fast would be the best if you plan on shooting multiple targets in a short amount of time, which sometimes happen. A buddy of mine shot 4 one evening with his 270. a large sow and 3 shoats. and he shot 3 of them from the ladder of his stand, he was leaving when they were headed toward him. He said he could have shot more but he could only get 3 shells back in his gun before he started shooting.
Bearing in mind that some of those critters can weigh upwards of 500 pounds, my preference in calibers is the .30-06.
In some places, they are known as the poor man's grizzly bear.
