new recurve

Postby sqwrly » Tue Jun 28, 2011 1:45 pm

i just bought a new recurve. i'd love some pointers on shooting, aiming, set ups, etc. right now i'm shooting carbon arrows, 100gr broad heads, shooting off the shelf. should i shoot feathers or vanes? i've heard you can only use feathers and i'm shooting vanes at the moment so any tips are helpful

The best advise I can give is order Master's of the barebow. You can find it online at 3Rivers Archery. A wealth of info. For quick pointers, you are typically going to shoot a much heavier front end set up with your shafts. Regardless of aluminum, carbon or wood. For example, I shoot a 125 grain head with a 100grain insert. Feathers are more forgiving and alot of guys are going with fletching 4 feathers rather than 3. The big thing is work on form, then work on tuning your shaft to the bow. The DVD i mention above will help you with all of that. Good luck

my fault for such a late response. The added feather gives more stability to the arrow.

how do you stop your feathers from getting messed up? it seems like theyre getting torn up when shooting off the shelf.

I can't say I've had alot of issues with tearing up feathers other than from contact from another arrow hitting next to one.

Of course if your shooting a lot then some wear should be expected.

Only other thing I can think of is if your getting a to much contact due to shooting shafts that are not tuned for the bow. i.e. maybe a shaft that is to stiff and its contacting the shelf more than it should.

Masters of the Barebow is a great dvd. I highly recommend it. My accuracy really improved after watching the dvd, it's full of good info.
