Kinetic Energy Calculator

Postby SJohnson » Mon Sep 22, 2008 7:58 am

Just wanted to let everyone know we developed a Kinetic Energy Calculator for the members of HuntOnly to use if your interested...

It's really simple to use, you just need your arrow speed in FPS and Arrow Weight in Grains... Pretty cool to see the KE that these new bows are producing now...

The Calculator is located here:
http://www.huntonly.com/kinetic_energy_cal.php

We are also going to work on a FPS calculator so that you don't need a Cronograph to figure it out... It will at least be able to give you a close estimate, but that'll be down the road a little more as it's alot more involved in developing...

Hope you enjoy...

Just in case anyone wants to impress your buddies next time your talking archery here’s a little tidbit...
The equation for Kinetic energy is =

Speed x Speed x Arrow weight ( divided by 450240)

so i got to ask whats is a good kinetic force when it comes to a bow? i was pretty happy that my bow shot around 300fps, i know thats slower then some top end bows but im happy with it, im sure i could tweek it up a little...... still with the arows im shooting i get around 65 ft lbs..... is this something i should be worried about?

65ft pounds is PLENTY... Anything over 60 is quite a bit... Of couse with today's bow's getting into the 70's is very common... But if you are at 65, you're good to go!

i whew.... to me 65 lbs seems kinda low, but i had not done any research on it. thanks for the info. i have been playing with the numbers a bit and changing like arrow weight and such and no matter what i stay between 60-65. now does anyone know if thats strong enough to go after a larger animal such as a elk? or should i get it up higher?

Again, if you are in the mid-60's I think you are good to go for Elk as well...
