what are they made of? i've been trying to do research and asking people i know but it's all different answers. one guy said it was hair that gets hard....i cant see that one.

I'm no expert but I don't think its hair that hardens.

It appears that antlers on deer are bone material.

Also, during growth they are covered with a skin that helps provide blood and thus nutrients to the antler.
Then the antler stops growing due to higher testosterone levels in the animal and the skin is rubbed off. This is what creates the coloring and "staining" of the antler.

genetics, and food play a role into their size. They are bone, and while they are growing they are still soft to a point, and thats why you see some that are deformed. They drop due to harmone levels, but restart their growth shortly after that.The time table is set my harmones. if you'll notice they always lose the velvet just before the rut.
Oh and while mostly true the old"once a spike always a spike"is a myth. I have found spike sheds in the woods before.
