Depends on what size hog you want to take. I took a hog with a 243 earlier this yr but it only topped the scales at 75 lbs. I know some guieds in Texas that use 243 only to hunt hogs and it gets the job done. I have also taken a hog with a 44 mag. IMHO there is no perfect riffle to take a hog just depends on what you want to use.
Weapons I've used to take game
Obsession SS Bow
Browning Mirage Bow
Ruger 44 Mag
Rem 870 12 ga
Mossberg 935 12 ga
Ruger M77 7mm Mag
Rem 770 308
Win 94 30-30
H&R 243 HevBrl
Savage 17 HMR

It has to do a lot with your shot placement. If you plan on shooting them right behind the ear, then I would say that a .243 would be more than enough. However, if you plan on taking them in the shoulder, I would move up to atleast a .270. Yes, you can kill them with a lower powered rifle, but the odds of you finding that animal are much more slim. I've shot about a 200 lb boar behind the shoulder from 75 yards with a .260 before. He rolled over and laid there for 15 minutes. Then, he got up and trotted off like nothing happened. No blood, no trail, and no animal. Now, I only take head shots, and haven't lost one yet.

The very first time I hog hunted (from a stand) I shot three hogs with a Marlin 30-30 in about 10 seconds.

I have also killed a few hogs with a taurus Raging Bull 454 pistol. This is one fun gun!

Nice, I think any rifle will do. IF you want a challenge then try shooting them with a bow...haha...anyway, it looks like the 30-30 worked just fine!

I have read many books on the subject and the pro's say to start at the 30 caliber rifles and work your way up.
(I know you can kill them with smaller guns,,,but I wouldn't)

You dont want to track a wounded hog,,,,,trust me.

Thank you Capt Rick. I will use the Savage next trip out. Now my brothers Taurus .45ACP dropped a 110lb sow DRT. I may purchase the Hi-Point Carbine in .45 as a back up .

A .45 ACP is a pretty weak bullet. If you use it see if your gun will shoot "+P" and make sure its a full metal jacket. You want penetration,,,not expansion
