Food plot preparation

HuntOnly Field Staff I live in a state full of agriculture fields. There are millions of acres of crops for wildlife to munch on all through the year, but especially in the fall. This is great for the overall health of the herd, but can be troublesome in a couple ways. That's why I like to supplement all the agriculture with some food of my own through the use of food plots.

Preseason standards

HuntOnly Field Staff We all start the season out the same; claiming that we are only going to shoot a trophy buck. One with Heavy antlers that only an old mature buck carries- one that belongs on the front page of every hunting publication known to man. But once we are seated in our stands temptation rises, young nice bucks seem to just be everywhere. Deer in years past we would have lowered the boom on any day of our career- seem to be everywhere. But no we are going to wait on “Mr. Big”! But what are we looking for?

The Buck Fever Vaccination

HuntOnly Field Staff If you are anything like me you are already looking forward to the upcoming archery season. I have been practicing my target shooting out in the yard. Out there I am in a controlled environment, taking my time, thinking about all aspects of the shot, deep concentration. And that is all fine and good, and of course a necessary fundamental for any good archer. Unfortunately all that seems to go out the window when a big buck comes into view. So how do we practice for that? I have a strategy.

5 Tips to increase your success for High Country Mule Deer

HuntOnly Field Staff It’s getting to be that time of the year again; the weather is hot outside, there are blossoms on the apple trees, and the high country mountains are green, filling the bellies of Mule Deer bucks with the vital nutrients needed to grow dark, heavy and wide antlers that fill my dreams at night. However, it is also the time of the year that in my opinion is the most vital part of ensuring your success of harvesting a mature mule deer in the fall. With their red summer coats and sensitive velvet antlers, mule deer bucks stand out from

Let them Go and Let them Grow

HuntOnly Field Staff Countless times I have been sitting in my home watching a hunting show and some guy is in the top of tree whispering. “ Here he comes, what a buck.” Then, out walks a two year old buck with barely eight points and a twelve inch spread. Most of the time I always think to myself that there is no way he’s going to shoot him. Then, BANG, and the little buck balls up in a pile. The outfitter, the hunter, nor anyone else will ever know the potential of the buck that just hit the dirt.

Successful Whitetail Deer Hunting

HuntOnly Field Staff With whitetail deer populations higher than they’ve ever been it is no wonder that deer hunting has become the most popular of all hunting sports. In some areas it has become as simple as walking out into the field and killing a deer. Yet in other areas one must hunt hard to just see a deer. The one common factor that most hunters share is the goal to take a big buck. There are many tactics that can contribute to ones success in the woods.

What’ll he score?

HuntOnly Field Staff We had walked a half-mile in order to have the wind right for our final stalk. With our pants dripping wet from the morning dew we had finally made it to within 200 yards of the buck. My client wanted to be no further then one hundred yards so from here we will crawl. Now we are as wet as if we jumped in a pool, and half frozen. Straining to see over the tall grass we looked through our binoculars and there he was. The buck had no clue we were there and was feeding broad side to us

Blood Tracking Dog "Dylan"

HuntOnly Field Staff My client had made a bad shot this morning with his bullet to far back and too high. I watched the bullet enter through my binoculars and knew exactly what happened. There is an areas about the size of one’s fist high on a whitetail’s back that when hit won’t bleed nor will it die within a reasonable time frame. This was the spot I watched the bullet go through this morning.

Ground Blind Hunting Whitetail Deer

HuntOnly Field Staff I enjoy hunting whitetail deer from ground blinds. Hunting deer from a blind has become very popular in my area. They provide the perfect setup for those of us that enjoy all day hunts, as well as those of us that enjoy hunting in the rain. Hunting out of a ground blind provides both comfort and camouflage especially in the late season when camouflage and climate become a challenge.

Take a kid hunting

HuntOnly Field Staff When I was nineteen my uncle had just became engaged to a woman with a six year old son. Young Daniel had expressed a lot of interest in the idea of hunting. So I talked them into bringing him up from Texas for the youth gun season in Oklahoma. After he completed the hunter safety courses required he was ready to go. That year only allowed the harvest of antlerless deer. So I decided we would set up near one of my bow stands in a make shift blind near a feeder that every morning I had bow hunted eight

Treestand Options for Hunting Whitetail Deer

HuntOnly Field Staff I’ve used for many kinds of treestands for hunting to include but not limited to tripod stands, climbing stands, hang-on stands and ladder stands. I was first introduced to hunting from an elevated stand when I started hunting in Maryland. I grew up in Pennsylvania hunting strictly from the ground in the 70’s and 80’s. My passion for bow hunting made hunting from treestands a must to be successful.

Shed Hunting… When and Where…?

HuntOnly Field Staff The hunting season is over for most of us and if that leaves a sick feeling in your stomach then “shed hunting season” might be just what the doctor ordered. Shed hunting is an important part of year round scouting that any serious hunter should employ. And who doesn’t love antlers, especially big ones! Every antler you’ve seen this year is out there (or soon will be) just lying in the leaves waiting to be found!

Acorns lead to early season Deer Hunting success

HuntOnly Field Staff For the second year in a row, nearly all of the crops are standing as we entered the beginning of the Illinois archery season. The typical field edge setup along a cut cornfield is not nearly as successful as years past. The key to tagging an early season whitetail is to find where the deer are feeding. In most cases, a loaded white oak tree is your best bet.

Early Deer Season and Heat

HuntOnly Field Staff There are a couple things you can count on when hunting the early deer season, unpressured deer, bugs and of course heat. In Maryland our bow season for deer opens in the middle of September and in this area of the country it can still be hot and humid. Maryland may not be as bad as some of the southern states but it still can be downright balmy. So here are a few tips that can make the difference between a miserable opening day and an enjoyable early season adventure.

Back in the Day Deer Hunting

HuntOnly Field Staff The year was 1975 when I started hunting whitetail deer in Pennsylvania. A lot of time has passed since then, if I only new then what I know now. My first hunting apparel consisted of a red snowmobile suite, a plastic fluorescent orange vest “It was the noisiest piece of clothing I’ve ever worn”, and an orange knit stocking cap made by one of my friend’s grandmother with our camp’s name stitched in the front “FUBAR”. I think it took me until I turned 16 to figure out what “FUBAR” stood for.

Buck to Doe Ratio Management

HuntOnly Field Staff When we as; deer hunters begin to think about the “rut”. We have dreams of buck seemingly running around with their eyes closed and their nostrils wide open looking for that next hot doe. But when the “rut” or peak of breeding occurs we seem to only catch a few glimpses of the big boys slipping in and out of thick cover almost just as they were in the early parts of the season if we were lucky enough to spot one of them during that part of the season.

Whitetail Deer Antler Facts

HuntOnly Field Staff The white tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is a medium-sized deer native to Canada, Central America, most of the United States and northern South America. Also known as the Virginia deer or simply the whitetail, it has been introduced to New Zealand and some European countries where its populations have expanded quickly thanks to its generalist nature and its ability to adapt to a wide range of habitats. Although white tail deer populations located in temperate climate and wooden areas seem to grow faster and bigger than others, the species has shown that it can adapt in harsher environments such as

Whitetail Scouting: During Season

HuntOnly Field Staff Many whitetail hunters do the majority of their scouting during the off-season or just before start of the deer season. The knowledge gained during these times is essential in putting the pieces of the puzzle together in order to harvest a mature buck or a freezer filling doe during the fall, but sometimes the areas you’ve located before the season don’t produce like you had hoped. In order to ensure success in this situation, you must incorporate some in-season scouting tactics.
