DEER CAMP

HuntOnly Field Staff My dad never went to college: he went to Vietnam. Yet when I was 13, he introduced me to the greatest fraternity house on the planet. The Buckeye Sportsmen Club was located in the small North Central Pennsylvania town of Morris. This was my first experience at deer camp, and my first experience of what fraternity life would bring later. From the outside, it just looked like a simple square building with four white cinder block walls and a green roof, but inside there was magic. According to Wikipedia, fraternity and sorority housing refers largely to the houses where people

Choosing the Right Arrow...

HuntOnly Field Staff I recently sat down and had a long conversation with carbon Express vice-president, Lennie Rezmer, that simply changed the way I look at archery. I asked Lennie a basic question, “How do I pick the proper arrow?”, and I came away with a much deeper understanding of archery performance and equipment.

Broadheads!

HuntOnly Field Staff If you want to end your -(and everyone else's)- search for the all time best, nastiest, killin’-est, best-flying, best penetrating, wound-channeling, exit-holing, bucket-of-red-paint-blood-trail-leavin’ broadhead out there, all you have to do is simply ask your hunting buddies…..because every one of them has a quiver-full of them and will swear by them.

Oklahoma deer season opens and closes real quick...

HuntOnly Field Staff The archery season in Oklahoma opened on October 1st 2010. This was the first year that the state game department allowed anyone to use a crossbow. Previously, only persons with disabilities as deemed by a medical doctor could legally carry a crossbow during archery season. This year was different; anyone could carry a crossbow into the woods.

Hunt Cover, especially during the late season…

HuntOnly Field Staff There are a few rules (more than I will mention in this writing but these are important) I have and usually follow very strictly when picking a tree to ascend for bowhunting. Number one is the wind, I never hunt a tree that does not provide favorable wind direction based on where I think the deer are coming from and heading to. Number two is cover, as a serious Bowhunter you need to be up close and personal with the deer your hunting and without cover that becomes a VERY tough game.

Crossbow Hunting In My Opinion

HuntOnly Field Staff The intent of this article is not to be controversial or inflammatory but to share thoughts, observations, opinions, and experiences I personally have or have experienced in the age old discussion and debate in the archery arena of crossbow hunting.

Practice makes almost perfect

HuntOnly Field Staff As bow hunting came to and end here in Maryland on 31 January I started my routine of practicing with my bow in preparation for the next hunting season. Although I don't consider myself Robin Hood by any stretch of the imagination, I have improved at hunting whitetail deer hunting with a bow over the past 10 years.

3 Arrows, 2 Robin Hoods, 1 Shooter

HuntOnly Field Staff Carbon Express® Pro Staff Shooter Scores a Rare Double Robin Hood. FLUSHING, Mich. A “Robin-Hooded” arrow is an accomplishment for any shooter and might occur once in a lifetime. A double Robin Hood on the other hand is an entirely different matter. A Robin Hood occurs when an arrow stuck in a target is literally pierced by a second arrow. For Carbon Express® Pro staff Shooter Bob Morgan, a practice round at the London Kentucky ASA shoot proved to be a once in a lifetime experience.

Archery Hunting is a valuable wildlife management tool

HuntOnly Field Staff About 20 years ago the city of Bismarck, working with the State Game and Fish Department, developed an urban archery hunt to help control a growing deer population within the city limits. Two decades later, the deer population is much lower, reports of human-deer conflicts are reduced, and very few problems have been documented.

5 things to help Prepare for Bowhunting

HuntOnly Field Staff 5 Things That Will Make Opening Day Much Sweeter I’m the type of hunter that daydreams about being in the woods all year long. I start preparing for archery season in May, and try to practice with my bow year round. Even though I can't seem to get bowhunting off my mind, I still end up running around getting all the things I should have gotten done in the summer two weeks before the season starts. This year I decided to get more organized. I set out five goals to work on regularly throughout the summer.

Trail Camera: Key to Whitetail Success ,Part 2

HuntOnly Field Staff This week I’m going to take a look at some of the features of many of today's trail cameras. All cameras have their positives and negatives and I plan on discussing many of these topics along the way. Film/Digital Cameras that take pictures using film are quickly becoming a thing of the past. They were the first camera introduced for the use of wildlife surveillance. They were great when they were the only option available to hunters, but now digital cameras have been introduce. Film cameras only allowed 24 or at most, 36 pictures to be takes. With digital cameras
